The water/cylinder jacket surrounds the cylinder liner of the MAN B&W L16/24 engine, forming the passage through which jacket cooling water circulates to control liner wall temperature during combustion. A cracked, corroded or leaking water jacket allows cooling water to seep into the crankcase or into the cylinder itself, resulting in loss of jacket cooling, overheating of the liner and piston, and progressive corrosion damage to surrounding components – making a sound, pressure-tight jacket casting essential to reliable engine operation.
